Dong-Feng 21 (other designations: DF-21 or CSS-5) is a Chinese medium-range ballistic missile (MRBM) solid fuel. The mass of the projectile is 14,700 kilograms, with a length of 10.7 meters and a diameter of 1.4 meters. The maximum range of the missile in the basic version is approximately 1,800 kilometers. It is armed with a single thermonuclear warhead with a power of up to 500 kilotons.

Dong-Feng 21 belongs to a long family of Chinese ballistic missiles, which date back to the Sino-Soviet agreement of 1950 between the two communist countries and scientific and technical cooperation between them. The Dong-Feng 21 missile was developed in the 1970s and was dedicated to destroying surface targets with a CEP deflection of 300-400 meters. However, in 2006 a revised version of this missile, called Dong-Feng 21A, appeared, with a range probably increased to approximately 2,200 kilometers and improved accuracy. It is worth noting that Dong-Feng 21 became the basis for the development of the JL-1 (CSS-N-3) missile that can be launched from a submarine.
