The Hwasong-5 is a modern North Korean medium-range ground-to-ground ballistic missile. It is assumed that this type of missile has a range of up to 320 kilometers and can carry a single warhead weighing up to approx. 1000 kilograms.
The Hwasong-5 is possibly a development of the Soviet R-17 Elbrus missile that North Korea received from Egypt in 1979 or 1980. The first prototypes of the new rocket were probably created in 1984, and a year later it began to enter the service of the North Korean armed forces in small batches. Production was started by the armaments plant No. 125 in Pyongyang. It is assumed that the Hwasong-5 missiles are capable of carrying conventional warheads (high-explosive and possibly cluster) as well as chemical and possibly biological weapons. In 1989, there was a far-reaching modernization of this missile - Hwasong-6 with an improved guidance system. Apart from North Korea, Iran is probably the only user of the Hwasong-5 missiles, which in 1985 purchased between 90 and 100 missiles of this type. North Korea has also sold Iran a license to produce the rockets that are produced there under the Shahab brand
