The SA-5 Gammon (Russian name: S-200 Angara) is a Soviet, and now Russian, heavy surface-to-air missile that was developed in the 1950s and 1960s and entered service in the USSR in 1967. In the basic version (designated as 5V21A), the length of the missile was 10.8 m, with a total weight of 7,100 kg, of which the maximum weight of the warhead was approximately 215 kg. The missile was able to reach a speed of 4 Ma, and its range was 180 kilometers. The SA-5 Gammon was developed for the needs of the Soviet Union air force as a new long-range missile (sometimes the term: very long-range), initially intended primarily to counter NATO strategic bombers trying to invade Soviet airspace. It was also assumed that the S-200 system would provide air defense to key facilities in the USSR, such as the most important industrial, administrative and military centers. Of course, as the projectile developed, its range and probability of hitting the target improved. For example, in the version of the missile marked as 5V28, the range has already increased to 300 kilometers, and the counter-target ceiling to 29,000 meters. It is worth adding that various versions of the S-200 missile were exported to the Warsaw Pact countries (including Poland), but also to countries such as Algeria, Bulgaria and India. The system remains in line to this day in several countries around the world.
