Gorizia was the Italian heavy cruiser under which The keel was laid in 1930 and the launch took place in December of the same year. The total length of the ship at the time of launching was 182.8 meters and a width of 20.6 meters. Full displacement reached approx. 14,500 tons and maximum speed up to 31-32 knots. The armament included: 8 203 mm guns, 16 100 mm guns and 6 40 mm guns. The unit also used two seaplanes.
Gorizia belonged to the Zara class of cruisers. Cruisers of this type were built as a de facto far-reaching extension of the Trento type units. Compared to their predecessors, they had much better armor at the expense of maximum speed. It should be added, however, that in the latter respect, the Zara type units were not inferior to British or French designs. In 1940, all units of this type were modernized primarily by strengthening their anti-aircraft armament. Gorizia was built at the OTO shipyard in Livorno. In the interwar period, it took part mainly indirectly in the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939), and in 1939 it participated in Italian actions against Albania. After Italy joined World War II in June 1940, it frequently took action against British convoys to and from Malta, as well as shielded its own convoys bound for North African ports. She took part, inter alia, in the Battle of Cape Spartivento (November 1940) or in the so-called I and II naval battles at Sirte (December 1941 and March 1942). In April 1943, it was severely damaged in an Allied air raid, and the damage was deepened in 1944 by British Special Forces. Gorizia was scrapped shortly after the end of World War II.
