The Type 071 is the class designation for modern Chinese Landing Craft (LPD). Units of this type have been entered into service in the PRC Navy since 2007. At present (2018), 4 units of this type remain in active service, and the construction of two more is planned. The 071 class ships are 210 meters long and 28 meters wide. Full displacement is around 28,000 tons and maximum speed is around 25 knots. The armament of a single unit of this type includes, among others: a single 76 mm cannon or four licensed AK-630 sets of 30 mm. The unit can operate four Z-8 Super Frelon helicopters (licensed version of Aerospatiale SA 321). The type 071 ships are de facto a new quality in the PRC Navy, as they significantly expand its possibilities of carrying out landing operations from the sea (using amphibious barges or amphibious vehicles) and from the air (using helicopters). Units of this type also have high seagoing strength and can take from approx. 500 to approx. 800 landing troops. These are units comparable, although probably second in terms of electronic equipment, to the American San Antonio class LPD.
